COPENHANGEN

In spite of its great traditions, Denmark’s capital city is defiant, youthful, and free and easy. Copenhagen is more than a flourishing centre of famous museums, theatres, galleries and modern Danish design, as alternative culture and cabaret thrives here too.

At every step, one encounters an atmosphere of individualism and tolerance.

On what is probably the world’s longest doo-time strip, Strøget, a pedestrian area of more than mile (almost 2 km), there is the usual bustle of business as in any other city but the people here also appear noticeably frequently to have friendly smiles on their faces.

The atmosphere of the Ny Havn (New Harbour) which is actually the oldest, is almost Mediterranean.

Tourists flock to Copenhagen in summer to occupy the tables and chairs of the restaurants, bars, and other hostelries immediately on the waterfront.

Art at the Tivoli Gardens – This amusement park was opened in 1834 and is a Danish institution that attracts visitors now solely because of its giant Ferris wheel, carousels and roller-coaster. There are also displays of folk dancing and international orchestras and ballet troupes perform in its large concert hall.

  • The colourful Market Square by the sea in the South Harbour,
  • Kaivopuisto Park and diplomatic residences,
  • the imposing statue of Marshall Mannerheim,
  • The Parliament Building, Finlandia Hall, the Orthodox Russian Church Uspenski and the Sibelius Monument.
  • A visit is also made to Temppeliaukio Church- called the “Rock Church” as it is carved out of solid rock (the church reserves the right to not allow the entry of visitors in case of ceremonies).

The tour ends at the Helsinki Harbour.

You will board the cruise Ship Silja Symphony/Silja Serenade, which would leave the South Harbour in the late afternoon around 4.45 Hrs

HELSINKI

Famous architects dominate the scene of the Finnish capital with its Nordic atmosphere. When one thinks of sun, sea and convivial entertainment, Helsinki is not the first place that springs to mind. Yet these are precisely the characteristics that make up the delight of the Finnish capital, together with the slightly Russian style of its townscape and the overwhelming friendliness of the city’s inhabitants.

In summer when the days are hot and the nights are clear the life spills out onto the streets, in courtyards, on the water, and in the many extensive parks. Then music of every genre drifts through the air whether by day on the esplanade –where people take a stroll by the harbour and in front of cultural centres surrounded by greenery or by night amid the canyons of the sleeping office blocks.  Hordes of young people sun themselves on the steps of the cathedral mixed in with tourists enjoying the panorama of the city and its harbour. The atmosphere is almost Mediterranean, especially on the colourful market place alongside the waters of the southern harbour in front of the residences of the mayor and Finland’s president.

Surely the most striking church though is the Temppeliaukio rock church that is one of the most impressive examples of modern Finnish architecture. Rock was hewn to the design of architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen to rise almost 40 feet in the centre of a residential area. The broad and largely uniform rotunda, enclosed by plain hewn rocks, is spanned by a giant copper and glass dome. From outside this is the only part of the building to be seen. The church is also used as a concert hall because of its dramatic acoustics resulting from the rock formation.

Day 06

STOCKHOLM

14th August

Accommodation: To be notified

Breakfast will be served on board.

You’ll arrive in Stockholm at 10.00 a.m.

Discover a city of contrasts. Go back 750 years in time and feel the medieval atmosphere of the Old Town “Gamla Stan” as you wander through its narrow streets. The seven hundred year old cathedral of Stockholm, Seat of the Archbishop, will be seen during your stroll through Old Town, where you will also get a chance to see Stortorget, where the Stockholm Blood Bath took place.

An inside visit will be paid to one of the city’s best known symbols, the City Hall with its Blue and Golden Halls, where the great Nobel banquet is held.

Overnight stay in Stockholm.

STOCKHOLM

The city of Stockholm is built on 14 islands and connected by 57 bridges. The city embraces the unique character of the 13th century Old Town and modern hi8gh-tech architecture. Stockholm’s islands are bordered by Lake Malaren in the west and the Baltic Sea in the east where the archipelago, with its 30,000 islands awaits exploration. The capital is a big city with a small town personality. Stockholm is proudly called “Beauty on Water”.

Originally Stockholm was just the now well preserved and idyllic Gamla Stan or Old Town on a single island, with its narrow, enchanting streets with small cafes, restaurants, galleries, and boutique-lined squares.

The massive Baroque royal castle crowns the northern end of the island alongside the smaller islet on which the Swedish parliament is situated. It is the only royal castle that was open in those days to the public. It was built between 1697 and 1704 on the foundation of a smaller castle that burnt down and was extended in 1754.

Close by and housed within a futuristic wooden building is the Vasa, an old wooden Swedish warship that was once the pride of the Swedish navy although it never set to sea. It foundered on its maiden voyage with all hands and sixty four cannon within the harbour basin. The Vasa lay well preserved in the Stockholm waters for 333 years before she was lifted from her 114 feet (35m) deep resting place in 1961.

Day 07

There is no set plan for the evening and you can spend it at leisure, visiting sites of your choice or simply relaxing at the hotel.

Overnight stay in Oslo.

OSLO

The Norwegian capital retains great cultural heritage. Oslo has blossomed in recent years like no other city in Europe. The places in the inner city stay open until late at night. Bars, cafes and restaurants along the Karl Johan Gate (a street) and in the futuristic Aker Brygge are filled with people at all hours and the theatres play to full house.

The countless museums worth visiting, architectural monuments and parks are mainly within the inner city and easily reached on foot. At the most perhaps one might take one of the ferries that in ten minutes take you from the main rail station to the island museum of Bygdey.

The Akershus Festing is a castle that was built on a strip of land south of the station built to orders of Hakon V in 1300. He wanted to halt the Swedish and transferred his seat of government from Bergen to here. At that time Oslo was just a small Hanseatic settlement that had been found 150 years earlier by King Harald Hardrade.

Long before the first settlement on the northern bank of the Oslo fjord there were Norse living here who as Viking, knew all the seas around Europe, traded with Asia and brought fear and terror for a time to the shores of the northern Atlantic.

No less impressive are the 192 realistic-sensitive granite, bronze, and iron sculptures of Gustav Vigeland in Frogner Park. The most important is a fifty-five foot high monolith from single block of granite. With filigree finesse Vigeland hewed a Life cycle of Man here between 1928 and 1942 from birth to death at old age to say goodbye to his grandchildren before his own death.
