Barcelona, Spain

After breakfast at the hotel, check out and have the morning at your leisure.

Barcelona is a city of splendid culture, industry and trade. Towering temple columns, ancient city walls and subterranean stone corridors provide a window into Roman-era Barcino. Fast forward a thousand years or so to the Middle Ages by taking a stroll through the shadowy lanes of the Gothic quarter, past tranquil plazas and soar through the 14th-century cathedrals. Looming behind the city, the rolling forest-covered Collserola hills provide a scenic setting for hiking, mountain biking or just admiring the view.

1200hrs – transfer to port in Barcelona for embarkation.

Day 04

Naples, Italy

Your ship will dock in Naples early in the morning. You may take an excursion (optional) or step out on your own to wander the streets of Naples.

Naples is a place of soul-stirring art and panoramas, spontaneous conversations and unexpected, inimitable elegance. Welcome to Italy’s most unlikely masterpiece.

Blessed with rich volcanic soils, a bountiful sea, and countless generations of culinary know-how, the Naples region is one of Italy’s epicurean heavyweights. It’s here that you’ll find the country’s best pizza, pasta and espresso, its most appetizing street markets, not to mention some of its most celebrated dishes.

Modern-day Pompeii (Pompei in Italian) may feel like a nondescript satellite of Naples, but it’s here that you’ll find Europe’s most compelling archaeological site: the ruins of Pompeii. The ruins of ancient Pompeii make for one of the world’s most engrossing archaeological experiences. Much of the site’s value lies in the fact that the town wasn’t simply blown away by Vesuvius in AD 79 but buried under a layer of lapilli (burning fragments of pumice stone). The result is a remarkably well-preserved slice of ancient life, where visitors can walk down Roman streets and snoop around millennia-old houses, temples, shops, cafes, amphitheatres and even a brothel.

Day 05

Rome (Civitevecchia), Italy

Vatican City

Arrive at Rome in Italy at 08am.

* Shore excursions are available & optional – ROME & VATICAN.

A heady mix of ruins, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life, Italy’s hot-blooded capital is one of the world’s most romantic and inspiring cities. Ancient icons such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall the city’s golden age as caput mundi (capital of the world), while it’s many monumental basilicas testify to its historical role as seat of the Catholic Church. Few cities can rival Rome’s astonishing artistic heritage. Idling around picturesque streets, whiling away hours at street side cafes, and people-watching on pretty piazzas – these are all central to the Roman experience.

The Vatican, the world’s smallest sovereign state (a mere 0.44 sq km), sits atop the low-lying Vatican hill just a few hundred metres west of the river Tiber. Centered on the domed bulk of St Peter’s Basilica and Piazza San Pietro, it contains some of Italy’s most celebrated masterpieces, many housed in the vast Vatican Museums.

Overnight on board.

Day 06

Florence / Pisa (Livorno), Italy

At 08am, ship will dock in Florence.

* Shore excursions are available & optional – FLORENCE & PISA

Cradle of the Renaissance, romantic, enchanting and utterly irresistible, Florence (Firenze) is a place to feast on world-class art and gourmet Tuscan cuisine. Italy’s fashion industry was born and bred here.

Once a maritime power to rival Genoa and Venice, Pisa now draws its fame from an architectural project gone terribly wrong. But the world-famous Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy sights in this compelling city. Education has fuelled the local economy since the 1400s, and students from across Italy compete for places in its elite university. This endows the centre of town with a vibrant cafe and bar scene, balancing an enviable portfolio of well-maintained Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas with a lively street life dominated by locals rather than tourists – a charm you will definitely not discover if you restrict your visit to Piazza deiMiracoli.

Day 07

Nice (Villefranche), France

Monte Carlo

At 08am, ship will arrive at Villefranche.

* Shore excursions are available & optional – MONACO – MONTECARLO

With its mix of real-city grit, old-world opulence, year-round sunshine, vibrant street life and stunning seaside location, no place in France compares with Nice. Take the train to the famous excursion destination Monaco and Monte Carlo.

Squeezed into just 200 hectares, Monaco might be the world’s second-smallest country (only the Vatican is smaller), but what it lacks in size it makes up for in attitude. A magnet for high-rollers and hedonists since the early 20th century, it’s also renowned as one of the world’s most notorious tax havens and home to the annual Formula One Grand Prix.

World-famous Monte Carlo is basically an ode to concrete and glass, dominated by high-rise hotels, super yachts and apartment blocks that rise into the hills like ranks of dominoes, planked into an utterly bewildering street layout seemingly designed to confound lowly pedestrians.

Overnight on board.

Day 08

Sete, France

Around 08am, the cruise ship will dock in Sète in France.

* Shore excursions are available & optional

Set alongside the saltwater lagoon of Étang du Thau, Sète is a gritty and not-always-pretty port, somewhat oversold by its local moniker of the ‘Little Venice of Languedoc’ – a reference to the many canals that run through town, including the Canal du Midi, which terminates its 240km journey here from Toulouse, and the Canal du Rhône, whose 98km journey from Beaucaire also ends here. But its honest, workaday atmosphere makes a refreshing change from the built-up tourist towns of the rest of the Languedoc coast – and if you like seafood, this is the place to indulge: Sète has the largest working fishing fleet anywhere on France’s Mediterranean coast. Sète’s beaches begin 3km southwest of the town centre.

Overnight on board.

Day 09

Barcelona / Spain

Gaudi's Church

Arrive at your initial destination, Barcelona at the end of this round trip at 08am. Disembark at 1000hrs and proceed on a half day tour of Barcelona.

Spain’s third-largest city is a magnificent place, content for Madrid and Barcelona to grab the headlines while it gets on with being a wonderfully livable city with thriving cultural, eating and nightlife scenes.

Barcelona is an enchanting seaside city with boundless culture, fabled architecture and a world-class drinking and dining scene.Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass – a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, and then create your own moveable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

After the city tour proceed to the airport.
