Valletta is more than just a historic relic. It is an elegant golden- hued city. Valletta is Malta’s small capital, built by the Knights of St John on a peninsula that’s only 1km by 600m. Its founder decreed that it should be ‘a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen’, and it retains its 16th-century elegance. It may be small, but it’s packed full of sights; when UNESCO named Valletta a World Heritage site, it described it as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’.

Day 05

Sicily (Messina), Italy

Arrive at Rome in Italy at 09am.

Eternal crossroads of the Mediterranean, the gorgeous island of Sicily continues to seduce travellers with its dazzling diversity of landscapes and cultural treasures.

Seductively beautiful and perfectly placed in the heart of the Mediterranean, Sicily has been luring passersby since the time of legends. The land of the Cyclops has been praised by poets from Homer to Virgil and prized by the many ancient cultures – Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Elymians, Romans and Greeks – whose bones lie buried here. Whether in the classical perfection of Agrigento’s Concordia temple, the monumental rubble of Selinunte’s columns or the rare grace of a dancing satyr statue rescued from Mazara del Vallo’s watery depths, reminders of bygone civilisations are everywhere.

Day 06

Amalfi Coast (Salerno), Italy

At 08am, ship will dock in Salerno.

* Shore excursions are available & optional.

Deemed an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape by Unesco, the Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most memorable destinations. Here, mountains plunge into the sea in a nail-biting vertical scene of precipitous crags, cliff-clinging abodes and verdant woodland. Turquoise seas and cinematic piazzas aside, the region is home to some of Italy’s finest hotels and restaurants. It’s also one of the country’s top spots for hiking, with well-marked trails providing the chance to escape the star-struck coastal crowds.

Day 07

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Vatican City

At 08am, ship will arrive at Rome.

* Shore excursions are available & optional.

A heady mix of ruins, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life, Italy’s hot-blooded capital is one of the world’s most romantic and inspiring cities. Ancient icons such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall the city’s golden age as caput mundi (capital of the world), while it’s many monumental basilicas testify to its historical role as seat of the Catholic Church. Few cities can rival Rome’s astonishing artistic heritage. Idling around picturesque streets, whiling away hours at street side cafes, and people-watching on pretty piazzas – these are all central to the Roman experience.

The Vatican, the world’s smallest sovereign state (a mere 0.44 sq km), sits atop the low-lying Vatican hill just a few hundred metres west of the river Tiber. Centered on the domed bulk of St Peter’s Basilica and Piazza San Pietro, it contains some of Italy’s most celebrated masterpieces, many housed in the vast Vatican Museums.

Day 09

Barcelona / Spain

Night in Barcelona

Arrive at your initial destination, Barcelona at the end of this round trip at 08am. Disembark at 1000hrs and proceed on a half day tour of Barcelona.

Spain’s third-largest city is a magnificent place, content for Madrid and Barcelona to grab the headlines while it gets on with being a wonderfully livable city with thriving cultural, eating and nightlife scenes.

Barcelona is an enchanting seaside city with boundless culture, fabled architecture and a world-class drinking and dining scene.Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass – a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, and then create your own movable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

After city tour, head to the airport for your departure flight in the evening.
