Day 01

COLOMBO – AVILA

17 SEP

MEAL PLAN: DINNER

Departure from Colombo.

Visit the Church of St Teresa of Avila.

Teresa of Avila was born in 1515 in Gotarrendura, in the province of Ávila, Spain. Her paternal grandfather, Juan Sánchez de Toledo, was a marrano (Jewish convert to Christianity) and was condemned by the Spanish Inquisition for allegedly returning to the Jewish faith. Her father, Alonso Sánchez de Cepeda, bought a knighthood and successfully assimilated into Christian society. Teresa’s mother, Beatriz de Ahumada y Cuevas was especially keen to raise her daughter as a pious Christian. Teresa was fascinated by accounts of the lives of the saints, and ran away from home at age seven with her brother Rodrigo to find martyrdom among the Moors. Her uncle stopped them as he was returning to the town, having spotted the two outside the town walls.

When Teresa was 14 her mother died; this resulted in Teresa becoming grief-stricken. This prompted her to  embrace a deeper devotion to the Virgin Mary as her spiritual mother. Along with this good resolution, however, she also developed immoderate interests in reading popular fiction (consisting, at that time,
mostly of medieval tales of knighthood) and caring for her own appearance. Teresa was sent for her education to the Augustinian nuns at Ávila. Lunch is not included.

Dinner and overnight in Avila.

The Apparition of Fatima – On 13 May 1917, three children were pasturing their little flock in the Cova da Iria, Parish of Fatima, town of Vila Nova de Ourem, today the diocese of Leira-Fatima. They were, Lucia de Jesus aged 10, and her cousins Francisco and Jactigana Marto aged 9 and 7.About midday, after praying the Rosary, as was their custom, they were amusing themselves building a little house of stones scattered around the place where the Basilica now stands. Suddenly they saw brilliant light and thinking it to be lightning, they decided to go home. But as they went down the slope another flash lit up the place and they saw on the top of a holmoak(where Chapel of Apparitions now stands), a “Lady more brilliant than the sun”, from whose hands hung a white rosary.

The Lady told the three little shepherds that it was necessary to pray much, and she invited them to return to the Cova da Iria during five consecutive months on the 13th day of June, July, September and October, the Lady appeared to them again and spoke to them in Cova da Iria. On the 19 August the apparition took place at Valinhos about 500 meters from Aljustrel, because on the 13th the children had been carried off by the local administrator to Vila Nova de Ourem.

At the last apparition, on the 13 October with about 70,000, people present, the Lady said to them that she was the “Lady of the Rosary”and that a chapel was to be built there in her honour.

After the apparition all present witnessed the miracle promised to the three children in July and September; the sun, resembling a silver disc could be gazed at without difficulty and whirling on itself like a wheel of fire, it seemed about to fall upon the earth. Afterwards when Lucia was a religious sister of St Dorthy,Our Lady appeared to her again in Spain(10 December 1925, 15 February 1926, in the convent of Pontevedral, and on the night of 13/14 June 1929, in the convent of Tuy,requesting the devotion of the five first Saturday (to pray the rosary, meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, confess and receive Holy Communion,in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary).,and consecration of Russia to the same Immaculate Heart. This request had been announced by the apparition on 13 July 1917, in what is called’the secret of Fatima”

We will also visit Valinhos, where the Virgin Mary appeared on 19th of August and Loca do Anjo

After lunch Proceed to Santarem and visit St. Stephen Church where the Eucharistic Miracle took place. An unhappy woman lived in Santarem between the years of 1225 and 1247, because she was convinced that her husband was unfaithful. She tried all the possible means to bring back her husband without any results. Desperate before her situation, she turned to sorcery visiting the soccer of the town. She promised her that her husband would again love her like before, but with the condition that she would pay her with a consecrated Host. This frightened very much the women, she knew this to be a sacrilege, but finally yield to it. After receiving communion in her parish church of Saint Stephen, she did not consume the host but left the church immediately took the host out of her mouth and placed it in her head scarf.

On her way to the sorceress house, the Holy Host started to bleed. The woman did not realize this was happening until the people passing by informed her, thinking that she was bleeding. The woman’s heart started to panic. She went home and placed the Host covered in the scarf at the bottom of a chest made of
wood where she kept personal items in her room. She remained there with fear all day until night time. When her husband arrived late that evening, they went to sleep, with the possibility that she herself did not rest much. The guilt of her sin tormented her, and also the idea that perhaps the Host continued to bleed.
In the darkness of the room, a great miracle occurred. From the chest brilliant rays of light shined through, allowing the couple to awakened. They saw a spectacular vision of angles adoring the Holy Host bleeding. The woman no long pintura: milagroEucarísticoer contained herself and confessed the great sin to her husband. Both repented and spent the rest of the night kneeling in adoration and reparation before the miraculous Host.

The next morning they informed the parish priest. He went to the house and heard the story from the woman. The priest returned the Host to the Church of St. Stephen in a solemn procession, accompanied by many priest and lay people. The host continued to bleed for three days. Finally it was decided to place the
holy host (still bleeding) in a reliquary made of beeswax. The holy host remained there until a second miracle occurred.
Second Miracle (1340?)

The priest enclosed the holy host in the beeswax reliquary and placed it in the tabernacle. This is where the second miracle occurred. When the priest opened the tabernacle door, the beeswax reliquary disintegrated in small pieces. In its place was a recipient made of glass that contained the blood of the host together with the beeswax. We can contemplate it together with the main reliquary that dates from 1782. Since the XVIII century this reliquary remains in the Eucharistic throne on the mayor altar. Today it is known as the Sanctuary of the Holy Miracle

The town is part of the municipality of Čitluk. Since 1981, it has become a popular site of religious pilgrimage due to reports of apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local Catholics. The name Međugorje literally means “between mountains”.

At an altitude of 200 m (660 ft) above sea level it has a mild Mediterranean climate. The town consists of an ethnically homogeneous Croat population of over 4,000. The Roman Catholic parish (local administrative and religious area) consists of five neighboring villages: Medjugorje, Bijakovići, Vionica, Miletina and
Šurmanci Following reports of apparitions, successive bishops of Mostar ruled the claims groundless. In March 2010, in view of continued public interest, the Holy See announced that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was forming an investigative commission, composed of bishops, theologians, and other experts, under the leadership of Cardinal Camillo Ruin, the Pope’s former Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome For those of you who have never been to Medjugorje, you will experience one of the most spiritual, and peaceful places on earth. It is believed that the Virgin Mary appeared to a group of children in 1981.Due to these apparitions, this simple village parish has become a gathering place for a multitude of pilgrims from around the world and one of the biggest prayer centers anywhere. Innumerable witnesses attest that they have found faith and peace in Medjugorje. The town has become one of the most popular pilgrimage sites for Catholics in the world and has turned into the 3rd-most important apparition site in Europe, visited annually by more than 1 million people. It has been estimated that 30 million pilgrims have come to Medjugorje since the apparitions were first report in 1981.Many pilgrims have reported experiencing visual phenomena such as the sun changing color or spinning in the sky. Three of the visionaries still see the Blessed Virgin every evening during the recitation of the Rosary at 18:40 hours and her messages are faithfully transcribed and sent out into the world.
