Be it a tourist or a traveler, no tour is completed if you have not visited the splendors of Sigiriya during your stay in Sri Lanka.

Here is another of Sri Lanka’s oldest treasures, the 1500 year old Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climbing the rock today is a breathtaking experience, not least because when passing the walkway you climb a set of spiral steps to another gallery some 40ft above to a sheltered pocket, to be faced with some beautiful frescoes called the Sigiriya Maidens. There were originally 500 but time and weather have left just eighteen of them.

Climb another set of steps to reach the first level known as the Lion Terrace. The strongest can continue the climb along an iron stairway that zig zags across the sheer rock face to the summit. There was even a pool which during the monsoons would overflow and provide fresh water.

The descent is clearly easier, but it is not advisable to make the trek if you suffer from vertigo. Start climbing the 1,000 steps to the top of the rock before 9.00 a.m. and at the latest before 10.00 a.m, when it can become insufferably hot.
